Public Criminal Records

For the past few years, almost all state and country governments have started making criminal records available to the public online via the Internet. Now, the Internet has become an open source of information that offers manifold avenues for searching information. So any private citizen or any organization can avail of the criminal records online whatever they want, usually within two to ten business days.

There are courts at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels, each with its own set of criminal records. A county may be considered as a province or a specific region, and there are almost 3000 counties in the United States. Each and every county court maintains its own set of criminal records. Normally the cases held at the county level include misdemeanors and felonies that are not reported at the federal level.

State criminal records include abbreviated conviction and arrest information from most county and state government agencies. County criminal records are not always reported at the state level. Some state courts make their records available on the Internet, but some states exclude the sensitive personal information online in their criminal records. State courts have to ensure a balance between privacy and accountability while providing criminal data online.

AA criminal record is a list of all the crimes that a person has been previously convicted of and includes the individual’s specific arrest records and personal records.

An arrest is the actual taking of the accused into custody by law enforcement officers or personnel. In contrast, a conviction is when the accused is found guilty in a court of law.

The data of various criminals compiled and maintained by the enforcement agencies are called Criminal records. It is basically a compilation of a person’s identification, arrest, conviction, incarceration, legal status, sex offender registration, warrant information, and other relevant criminal history. The main purpose of having such records is to provide a complete criminal history of a person whenever needed. It also helps in short listing suspected criminals in any case and for enhanced sentencing in criminal prosecutions. Criminal records in USA are matter of public record and so they can be accessed by anybody who is willing to do so. The only catch is that when offender has committed any crime for first time and his/her offence is a small one, it can be sealed by the judge. In this case, only selected government agencies can access the record. In this case, the person convicted can legally say no if asked whether he/she has been convicted ever. Such questions are asked routinely during employment etc

Local police departments, sheriff’s offices, and specialty police agencies may maintain their own internal databases. On the state level, state police, troopers, highway patrol, correctional agencies, and other law enforcement agencies may also maintain separate databases. The federal government maintains extensive criminal histories and acts as a central repository for all agencies to report their own data.
